People throughout the United States were stunned when Chicago finished a disappointing fourth in voting for the 2016 Summer Olympics back in October.
Sure The 2010 Winter Olympics Haven’t Even Started, But Let’s Talk 2022!
↵The United States Olympic Committee isn’t giving up though, not by a long shot. And since it is January and the next Winter Olympics start in exactly one month, I think you can figure out what the USOC’s next step is.
↵That’s right, the campaign for the 2022 Winter Olympics is underway!
↵The bid would apparently be an effort to improve the USOC’s standing internationally. However, how this would be accomplished isn’t made very clear.
↵My theory: An overjoyed International Olympic Committee, happy to have an eager host for a less popular Winter Games, may just hand the U.S. a bonus Summer Games as a thank you present, kind of like PBS hands out tote bags during pledge drives.
↵Two cities are mentioned as potential hosts, Lake Tahoe and Denver. I’m now going to say something you’ll read every time you see “Denver” and “Winter Olympics” in the same news story until the Colorado capital actually hosts the Games from all the way through. “Denver had their shot in 1976 and gave it up when the people of Colorado didn’t want to foot the bill.” Sure that was 34 years ago, but what’s three and a half decades in the grand scheme of things.
↵Of course, the USOC’s plans could have to go right back on ice if the U.S. gets the World Cup in 2022 instead of 2018.
