The Florida Marlins are the George Costanza of Major League Baseball: they’re cheap. Really cheap.
Florida Marlins Have To Spend Money -- It’s An Order!
↵The Marlins are so cheap, in fact, that they are being ordered to spend more money this season by the MLB.
↵Time to open up ‘em pocketbooks!
↵The Marlins’ opening day payroll was almost, but not quite, $37 million in 2009, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts. To put the organization’s spending into perspective, they spent just as much money as the New York Yankees ($201 million) did in 2009 ... but over the last six seasons combined ($203 million).
↵So how should the Marlins spend more money? Aroldis Chapman would have been a good start, but he slipped out of their fingers to the Cincinnati Reds. Somehow. They could also sign every remaining Scott Boras client left in the free agent market. Rick Ankiel, anyone? Johnny Damon? Jarrod Washburn? Eric Gagne?
↵They could also call George Steinbrenner. He might know a thing or two about money management.
