Virginia Knocks Off No. 20 Georgia Tech In Charlottesville
Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Sylven Landesberg led all scorers with 22 points to go with six rebounds and five assists, as Virginia held off 20th- ranked Georgia Tech, 82-75, in an ACC matchup at John Paul Jones Arena.
Mustapha Farrakhan finished with 15 points and Mike Scott went for 12 points and six boards for Virginia (10-4, 2-0 ACC), which has won six straight, including a 70-62 conference-opening win over North Carolina State on Saturday.
Zachery Peacock had a team-best 19 points and seven rebounds, while Iman Shumpert had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds for Georgia Tech (12-4, 1-2), which was unable keep the momentum going after knocking off then-No. 5 Duke on Saturday.
Derrick Favors ended with 12 points and 11 boards for the Yellow Jackets, who had won four of their last five.
After Georgia Tech went ahead by three, 59-56, at the midway point of the second half following a Peacock jumper, the Cavaliers made their move with an 11-0 burst. Scott got things started with a layup and Landesberg finished it off with two at the line to put Virginia ahead 67-59 with just over five minutes left.
Jeff Jones' two makes at the line with nearly a minute and a half to go stretched the hosts' lead to 74-63 and they held on the rest of the way.
In a closely contested opening 20 minutes, Landesberg’s jumper and two from the line put Virginia ahead 35-30 with nearly four minutes left.
However, Georgia Tech closed strong, as Favors bookended an 9-3 run with a pair of layups to give the Yellow Jackets a 39-38 advantage heading into the break.
Despite the loss, Georgia Tech still leads the all-time series with Virginia, 38-31...Gani Lawal had 12 points for GT.
