You Mean A Heat Wave Before The Winter Olympics Is A Bad Thing?

The Winter Games are now less than a month away, but if you were hoping to test some of the courses before the athletes do, you’re out of luck. It’s just too warm at the moment.

↵Cypress Mountain, the venue for snowboarding and freestyle skiing that happens to be right outside of Vancouver, is now closed to protect the snow that’s currently on the ground. The problem is unseasonably warm temperatures and rain.

↵The Alpine and Nordic skiing venues in Whistler, 78 miles (or, since it is Canada, 125 kilometres) from Vancouver up in the Coast Ranges, aren’t affected.

↵This brings me back to the last Winter Games held in Canada. In Calgary back in 1988, the area’s famous chinook winds forced several outdoor events to be delayed. One day in particular sticks out to me as being unseasonably warm.

↵“How warm?” you may ask. ABC threw up a cheesy 80s graphic with the Calgary Tower on one side and a Miami palm tree on the other, with the two cities’ temperatures listed. There wasn’t much of a difference.

↵With the wackiness of this winter, you just may see a bit too much of Jim Cantore during next month’s Olympics TV coverage.
