Binghamton Basketball Just Can’t Stay Out Of The News

This hasn’t been the greatest season for the defending America East champion Binghamton Bearcats. Point guard Tiki Mayben was arrested on drug charges, five other players were kicked off the team for academic and legal issues, head coach Kevin Broadus was placed on indefinite paid leave, the athletic director resigned and the university president just retired.

↵(Takes a deep breath.)

↵But the Bearcats have persevered under interim head coach Mark Macon. While they’re currently 7-11 overall, Binghamton owned a 2-1 mark in the America East heading into tonight’s game with preseason league favorite Boston University.

↵That’s when things got ugly for Binghamton again. From the Twitter feed of the New York Times’ Pete Thamel...

↵↵I’m at Boston University-Binghamton hoops. A near-brawl just busted out. (BU head coach) Pat Chambers ran 94-feet to pull (BU forward) John Holland away from scrum.

↵↵The Bearcats’ best remaining player fouled out as a result of the skirmish.

↵↵Wright is Bing’s only competent offensive player, and Mark Macon gambled after he picked up fourth with 11:47. Ouch. He’s back on bench.

↵↵And to wrap up the foul situation...

↵↵Scrum started on a loose ball when Bing’s Chretien Lukusa started jawing with a BU player. Refs had to break it up. Double techs assessed.

↵↵With three total technicals, BU-Binghamton won’t compare to Louisville-Kentucky or Cincinnati-Xavier, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Bearcats can’t buy good publicity at this point.
