While many college basketball fans were watching Wake Forest take on eighth-ranked Duke, I was watching Illinois State get blown out by Drake in Des Moines. (Why? Well, I’m a sucker for Valley basketball.)
College Basketball Games Will Now Only Last 39:53 In Des Moines
↵The Bulldogs led the Redbirds 35-15 at halftime, and were up 19 with 2:39 to go. At that point, Illinois State decided to go on a bit of a run, cutting the Drake lead to 10 with 16 seconds to go. That’s when the Bulldogs called a timeout. A few seconds later, the clock ended the contest.
↵Yes, I know the clock traditionally dictates when the game ends, but not quite in this manner.
↵The scoreboard at the Knapp Center must have heard the ESPNU announcers joking about the game going a full 40 minutes. Nine seconds after Drake’s timeout ended, the clock stopped cold with seven seconds to go. No whistle. No basket. It just shut down.
↵After a few moments of confusion, the officials called the game. I guess they didn’t think Osiris Eldridge had a 10-point play up his sleeve to send it to overtime.
