Weekend Wake Up: Colts Roll in Snoozer, Scare Saturday, Northwestern Punks Purdue
Colts Cruise. If you watch the above video, you will see the single most exciting thing that happened in the Colts’ 20-3 win over the Ravens Saturday night. Ed Reed’s pick-turned-fumble -- forced by the hustle of Pierre Garcon -- was just the first of his two interceptions in a five-minute stretch to be nullified by the end of the play. (The other one came back on a penalty.) Peyton Manning was good, Ray Rice was wonderful, and Joe Flacco was awful. The game was nearly unwatchable.
Few Favorites Flinch... There were many close calls for college basketball’s top teams on Saturday. Texas was pushed to overtime. So was Tennessee. Kentucky had to hold off Auburn, and Syracuse just eked one out against West Virginia. For most of the teams in college hoops’ penthouse, Saturday was about being shaken up, not falling down. Exceptions: Hyper-overrated North Carolina losing and Wisconsin being “upset” on the road by an Ohio State team with a healthy Evan Turner, neither of which was all that stunning.
...But Purdue Falls. And then there were the Boilermakers. Purdue went into Evanston, held three-happy Northwestern to just four triples, forced 15 turnovers -- and lost by eight. They made just 21 of 59 shots, were outrebounded 31-20, and committed 25 fouls. Oh, and E’Twaun Moore and Robbie Hummel combined for 44 of their 64 points. It’s probably a blip, but this is a bad loss for a team that garnered Final Four hype early this season, even if Northwestern is edging ever closer to their first NCAA Tournement berth.
