There Is Still Fight In José Offerman

José Offerman has bounced around the minor leagues of baseball since playing for three MLB teams in 2005. That’s partly because in 2007, he assaulted the mound, bat in hand, during a game with the Long Island Ducks, which resulted in probation and the sort of unofficially closed doors that are essentially tantamount to a ban from baseball in the United States.Since 2008, Offerman has been a player-manager for Tigres del Licey, a Dominican team. Given the fit of pique that he put on in a game this weekend, he might not be holding that title for much longer.

That’s Offerman, coming out to argue about balls and strikes with umpire Daniel Rayburn during a Dominican winter league game, then appearing to strike him in either the face or the neck. The shot sent Rayburn to the dirt, and got Offerman detained. There is no word yet on whether he will face criminal charges or suspension.

Offerman was a serviceable major leaguer in his career, but he never had much pop -- he hit just 57 homers in more than 5,600 at-bats. I’d say he’s solving some of those power issues in the minors; it’s the newfound anger ones that are troubling.
