Note to Martha Coakley: Curt Schilling Is Not a Yankees Fan
If I told you that Curt Schilling’s name became an issue during a political campaign and he wasn’t the one making a fool of himself, would you believe me? Now what if I told you that the campaign was Martha Coakley’s?
Coakley has been what one pundit termed “a mess of a candidate” for the Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy. On Friday, the Democrat managed to make another misstep, this time by invoking The Man With the Bloody Sock’s name, and calling him a Yankees fan. (You can hear the remark in the above video.)
Who knows if this will matter to Red Sox Nation? Hopefully, most voters will consider qualities of their prospective Senator beyond MLB veteran recognition. But it cannot be denied that Schilling, who supports Coakley’s Republican challenger, Scott Brown, got the last and best laugh here. He blogs, in an entry entitled “I’ve Been Called a Lot of Things”:
⇥⇥But never, and I mean never, could anyone ever make the mistake of calling me a Yankee fan. Well, check that, if you didn’t know what the hell is going on in your own state maybe you could….The best possible -- and therefore least likely -- Coakley response? “Eh, I thought it was ketchup.“
