Sunday Night Hoops: No. 8 Duke Hosts Wake Forest In Tobacco Road Tilt
Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Kyle Singler posted 21 points and 15 rebounds and Miles Plumlee chipped in 19 and 14 boards to carry No. 8 Duke in a 90-70 victory over Wake Forest in a physical ACC clash.
Nolan Smith donated 20 points and Mason Plumlee added 11 for the Blue Devils (15-2, 3-1 ACC), who have won two in a row since losing at Georgia Tech last weekend. Jon Scheyer ended with nine points and six assists in the win.
Al-Farouq Aminu logged 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Chas McFarland recorded 17 and 10 for the Demon Deacons (12-4, 2-2), who were coming off an 85-83 overtime win over Maryland on Tuesday.
Ishmael Smith scored just seven points on 3-of-12 shooting while battling foul trouble for most of the game.
The Demon Deacons were down eight at the break and battled back to tie the game, 55-55, on Aminu’s alley-oop slam less than six minutes in.
Singler answered with a three-pointer to ignite a string of 13 straight Duke points. Scheyer converted a three-point play and Ishmael Smith was whistled for an intentional foul on a streaking Miles Plumlee, who made two free throws prior to Lance Thomas hitting a jumper.
To end the stretch, Singler came up with a loose ball on the offensive end, setting up a Nolan Smith trey for a 68-56 cushion with 11 1/2 minutes to play.
The visitors never recovered from the blow, as a Nolan Smith layup near the four-minute mark had the margin up to 83-68, and the Blue Devils cruised to the finish line.
It was close for most of the first half, as an Aminu dunk gave Wake Forest a 34-30 lead with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the opening stanza.
After trading baskets, Duke scored 16 of the half’s final 20 points, sparked by a Singler three-pointer and capped by a Scheyer make from the corner for a 46-38 edge at the break.
