Find Jozy Altidore Now, And Encase Him In Bubble Wrap For Five Months

↵It just figures that the instant the United States cobbled together a respectable, if not world class, strike corps everything would go straight to hell. Charlie Davies is currently lucky↵to be alive and extremely questionable for South Africa after a fatal car crash in the aftermath of the Confederation’s Cup, and now the guy who launched this magnificent cruise missile…↵

↵

↵↵…broke his damn knee. It probably damaged one of his ligaments, and he is likely out for the World Cup. Fulham manager Roy↵Hodgson:↵

↵↵⇥↵⇥“The initial prognosis for Clint is not good. It looks like he has suffered cruciate knee ligament damage, which if he has, keeps him out of action for a while.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥“We won’t know for certain until the scan is completed on Monday, but the doctors are pretty good these days and often their initial prognosis proves to be the correct one.”↵⇥

↵↵↵The full extent of Dempsey’s injury isn’t known yet—Tuesday↵is D-day—but if it’s an tear there’s no way he’s ready for South Africa in just five months. The initial prognosis is a PCL tear that would rule Dempsey out of the World Cup unless he has Wolverine-style healing powers.↵

↵

↵Who else wants to die? The USA has lost an established Premiership forward and an emerging star who had just transferred to a solid Ligue One side. In their place are Jozy Altidore, who is promising but can't get off the bench at Hull, and… oh God… Eddie Johnson? Brian Ching? Some other MLS striker? Sweet Jesus. ↵

↵↵More likely, the Nats will pull Landon Donovan into an attacking midfield/sunken forward role and deploy Jose Torres or the recently rejuvenated Damarcus Beasley in Donovan’s place. The right side of the midfield could be Stuart Holden or, if Jermaine Jones ever gets healthy, couldn’t they pull Michael Bradley into a slightly more attacking role? ↵He can’t cross but if we’re playing Donovan at forward there aren’t going to be a lot of attractive targets in the box. ↵

↵↵But, yeah… Eddie Johnson may have just gotten himself on the World Cup roster. Hide my gun.↵
