As expected, the Cowboys will bring back Wade Phillips to coach Dallas next season, according to ESPN's Ed Werder (via Adam Schefter). Given that the Cowboys won a playoff game for the first time in 13 years -- which was widely thought to be what Phillips needed to do to keep his job -- it's unsurprising that Jerry Jones retained Phillips. Still, considering how the Vikings absolutely dismantled the Cowboys last Sunday, there had been some doubt about whether one playoff win would still be enough. Apparently it was.
Wade Phillips Will Be Back As Cowboys Coach In 2010
Given the uncertain economic climate, along with a new CBA potentially on the way, letting Phillips play out the final season of his contract makes sense for the Cowboys. Especially if they don’t think they can lure the kind of big-name coach this offseason with whom Jones has been linked. Also, the Cowboys undeniably played better for Phillips down the stretch this past season, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, which is Phillips’ specialty.
The Cowboys have won two NFC East titles in the past three years under Phillips.
