Islanders 4, Devils 0: DiPietro Earns First Shutout In Two Years
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Rick DiPietro stopped all 20 shots he faced to post his first shutout of the season as the New York Islanders shocked the New Jersey Devils, 4-0, at Nassau Coliseum.
DiPietro, who made his return to the lineup nine days ago after missing the first three months of the season following major left-knee surgery, posted his first whitewash since February 21, 2008.
Matt Moulson tallied twice while Mark Streit and Josh Bailey also scored for the Islanders, who have won four consecutive games and six of seven.
Martin Brodeur allowed four goals on 32 shots through two periods in defeat for the Devils, who have dropped three in a row and four of five. Yann Danis stopped 14-of-14 shots over the final 20 minutes.
Moulson opened the scoring 1:07 into the contest, off a dish from Frans Nielsen, and over a minute later appeared to take a two-goal lead on a Richard Park tally. Despite Park shooting into an open net, the play was nullified due to an early whistle.
Streit did eventually made it 2-0 on the power play at 3:44, taking a failed clear and blasting a point shot home.
Bailey's successful chance pushed New York's lead to 3-0 with 4:18 left in the second, and it was 4-0 for the home team inside two minutes to play in the period when Andy Sutton's point shot hit Moulson on the way past Brodeur.
DiPietro finished the contest by stopping nine Devils shots in the third period.
