Andy Roddick Throws His First Tantrum Of Grand Slam Season

Andy Roddick, America’s best hope for losing a grand slam final, has a history of rage, often times to his detriment. Something makes him angry, he lets it get under his skin, loses focus, self-destructs. The most recent, and probably worst, example of which came in last year’s French against Gael Monfils when he seemingly forgot he was playing in the biggest match of his career at Roland Garros and decided to focus solely on how angry he was about the lack of daylight left. He was subsequently destroyed by Monfils.

↵On Tuesday night, Roddick’s rage reared its head again, although this time it was after the match was firmly in hand -- most of it actually coming once the match was over. I’m not sure if that makes his outburst better or worse, although I’m fairly certain it makes it more childish. You won: shake the ump’s hand, wave to the crowd, pack your stuff, get ready for your next match.

↵Of course, that wasn’t how it went down. First, he gets upset over the chair umpire’s decision not to let him replay a point. But he let’s it go. As he should -- he’s serving match point. But then, after winning the match, he decides the umpire simply must know how wrong he was. Roddick hurls several obscenities his way, which start around the 2:45 mark:

↵To Roddick’s credit, after the match he said he was wrong. Sort of. I’m not really sure if this is an apology or not.
