No. 18 Wisconsin Rallies To Defeat Michigan
Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Trevon Hughes scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, as 18th-ranked Wisconsin rallied from a horrendous start to beat Michigan, 54-48, in a defensive battle at the Kohl Center.
Rob Wilson totaled 13 points, and Keaton Nankivil 10 for the Badgers (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten), who bounced back from a 60-51 road loss to Ohio State on Saturday.
DeShawn Sims had 23 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out for Michigan (10-8, 3-3), which had won its previous two games, including a victory over Connecticut on Sunday. Manny Harris ended with 11 points on just 4-of-14 shooting for the Wolverines.
Each team struggled shooting the basketball, with the Badgers ending at 34 percent and the Wolverines at 36.2, but Wisconsin managed to win at home over Michigan for the ninth straight time. The last time the Wolverines won at the Kohl Center was a 51-39 victory on December 30, 1999.
Harris’ jumper widened Michigan’s lead to 43-39 with 5:17 left, but Wisconsin scored the next 10 points to go in front. Hughes gave the hosts the edge with a jumper and knifed through the lane for a layup for a 47-43 edge with 2:16 remaining. Wilson added two foul shots with 44 seconds to go for a sizeable six-point bulge.
Harris came back at the other end with a three-point play, but Hughes made two from the line, and the Badgers held on down the stretch.
The Badgers gave up the game’s first six points and trailed 13-2 after Harris nailed a three-pointer with 11:22 remaining. Wisconsin, though, netted the final eight points of the half to get within 21-18.
Michigan pushed its lead back to double-digits when Harris drilled another three for a 33-23 advantage with nearly 14 minutes left.
Wisconsin later used a 7-0 run to get within 39-37 on Wilson’s layup with 6 1/2 minutes to go.
Michigan has dropped its last seven games against Wisconsin...The Badgers have won 16 straight home games. Under head coach Bo Ryan, Wisconsin is 131-10 at home...Nankivil also had eight rebounds...Ryan is just one victory away from becoming the 18th coach in conference history to record 100 Big Ten wins. Since Ryan took over in 2001, Wisconsin has posted a 99-40 Big Ten record...The Badgers ended 4-of-24 from three-point range, including a 1-of-10 performance in the first half.
