Prince Dedicates Worst Fight Song Ever to Vikings
↵
↵Minnesota’s freakiest native son, Prince, has been spotted a few times this season at the Metrodome taking in Vikings games, most recently Sunday’s victory over Dallas. This strikes some as odd, as The Purple One has never really been an avowed football fan.↵↵He’s going all-in now, though, having composed “Purple and Gold,” in tribute to his beloved Vikings. Now, Prince is a musical genius and gave what was one of the best Super Bowl halftime performances a few years back at Super Bowl XLI in Miami, but this is one horrifically overwrought fight song. Just ghastly. ↵
↵↵Which is exactly why fight songs must be left to untalented amateurs. Since they’re going to be bad regardless, the point is to brim with boundless misdirected and goofy energy. Because it’s difficult task to place sports fanaticism into compelling musical form. It’s such a ridiculous thing to get overly emotional about, and music makes the point all the more salient. So you might as well have 15 other discordant elements flying around at the same time. ↵
↵↵Take this Saints fan’s song. It’s just as bad, if not worse, musically than Prince’s. But it’s patently ridiculous and owns it. I can rewatch a few more times, whereas I never want to hear “Purple and Gold” ever again.↵
