As soon as the idea of the “loser point” -- the point awarded to teams that lose a game in overtime or a shootout -- was created, people have been trying to tweak the points system to make it work their way. Today, CBC Sports’ Tim Wharnsby is reporting that Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is proposing a shootout win be worth a point and a half. Here is what Howson has to say on the situation:
Another Crazy Idea To Change The Points System
↵↵“Everybody agrees that [shootouts are] a skill competition,” Howson told the Columbus Dispatch, “and the weight of getting two points out of a skill competition is disproportionate to wins in regulation and overtime. This might get shot out of the sky, but I think it’s something we should be looking at.”
↵↵While having a separate point total for regulation/overtime/shootout losses would make sense, I propose an idea that eliminates the confusion out of all of it. Every game there is a winner and a loser and therefore a loss is a loss no matter how it is done. That would eliminate the need of a points system to start with because when a person looks at the standings, they can tell how far ahead or back their favorite team is.
