Las Vegas-based heavyweight Gilbert Yvel (36-14-1) is close to signing a contract to fight Pat Barry (5-1) at UFC 115 in Vancouver in June.
Sources close to both camps told the Las Vegas Sun the two sides have agreed to the fight and should sign bout agreements soon.
Gilbert Yvel v. Pat Barry at UFC 115
There really isn’t any talking around the fact that this is as much of a kickboxing match as it is mixed martial arts. That doesn’t really change the fact that it should be an absolute blast to watch. Barry is coming off an extremely gutsy KO win over Antoni Hardonk. The fight earned Barry a KO of the Night bonus, a welcome reward for a man who was living off rice and ketchup in the days leading up to the fight.
Yvel’s story is not so heartwarming. His history as the bad boy of MMA is not one that will soon be forgotten. Be it picking up multiple DQ losses or knocking out a referee during a match, Yvel had never been one to go down without making some noise. A “mature” Gilbert made his way to the world’s biggest promotion as he made his UFC debut at UFC 108. It didn’t take long before Yvel was stopped via strikes by rising star Junior dos Santos.
Both men possess a seemingly endless supply of KO power in both their fists and legs so it would be a shock to see this fight make it’s way to the judges. But then again the same was said about many similar fights. Alexander vs. Slice anyone?
