Walker left any ego outside the front door when he entered the American Kickboxing Academy.``That’s one thing you have to do, and I did it when I started training [MMA] there,‘’ Walker said. ``I told [AKA founder and trainer] Javier Mendez. I said, `Javier, it is up to you and the fighters here. I would love to fight, but after a couple of weeks, if you don’t think I can do it, you tell me, or the fighters tell me, and I’ll swallow my pride and not do it.’
``It is a serious sport. It’s not a gimmick. It’s not fake. You can get hurt, if you don’t know what you’re doing in the ring. At the same time, AKA has a lot of pride. So I left it up to them.
``It was so difficult because I was at the top of my game in football and in track & field and in bobsled, being on the Olympic team. I’ve done a lot of things, but I had to forget about all those things when I walked into that gym.’’
Herschel Walker Saying All The Right Things About MMA Debut
Walker has managed to say all the right things in the build up to this fight. He isn’t planning on trying to challenge Fedor, he understands there is a risk to the sport, and he wants to challenge himself. Strikeforce has no responsibility to not put this on the main card when it will clearly draw a lot of attention.
