With the Senior Bowl practices coming to a close today, the hub-bub continues to be about Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
Saints college scouting director: Player can’t hurt himself at Senior Bowl
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said that Tebow’s participation in the Senior Bowl hurt his stock “because looking at him and comparing him to other mid-level quarterbacks, it’s not Bradford and Clausen here. It’s Tony Pike, who’s the best of the group and he’s probably going to be a third-round pick.”
On the surface, McShay has a point. But so does Rick Reiprish, director of college scouting for the New Orleans Saints.
“Since I’ve been here (with the Saints), we’ve not downgraded a guy because of his bowl-game practices or the bowl game,” Reiprish told Al.com. “There’s no way you’re going to hurt yourself by coming to a bowl game.”
However, if the draft stock of a player is not affected by by the Senior Bowl, then why participate? Why are there so many scouts, coaches and personnel men? Why did the coaches from Detroit and Miami agree to participate? Certainly it’s not because Alabama is a tourist attraction.
No, the Senior Bowl practices shouldn’t supersede four years of game tape, but they have to serve some purpose. But what exactly is that purpose? You tell me. And if you vote “no,” let me know why.
