Our Marlins blog, FishStripes, reports that the team has signed reliever Derrick Turnbow to a minor-league deal, and as the world turns, the man just keeps living the life of Eric Gagne. Consider these points: both guys are listed at about 200 pounds, but you sort of think it’s a lie. Both have sported goofy haircuts. Both are right-handed relievers who were once dominant All-Star closers, but are now mediocre-at-best journeymen.
Marlins Acquire Derrick Turnbow, The Poor Man’s Eric Gagne
↵Turnbow is a kind of discount version of Gagne -- while Gagne was the best closer in the National League for three years, Turnbow really only had one good year. I hope Turnbow bounces back, because his contribution to my 2005 fantasy team has earned my loyalty, but as I was looking up his stats I happened across the fact that he was named an All-Star in 2006. That year, he finished with a 6.87 ERA. Has anyone ever had a worse ERA during an All-Star season? I don’t have the time to sift through mountains of baseball records, but I’m willing to bet on it.
