Battle For Playoff Positioning: Detroit And Nashville Square Off

After falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in an epic game seven in last season's Stanley Cup Finals, the Detroit Red Wings have struggled all season long with inconsistent goaltending and a rash of devastating injuries to key players. Yet with a surging Jimmy Howard between the pipes the Red Wings looked as if they were ready to jump right back into the thick of the Western Conference playoff race. Yet Detroit has just one win in their last seven games and have hit a wall in their climb back up the standings.
Their saving grace has been the three ‘loser points’ acquired in recent shootout and overtime losses. Tonight, the Red Wings have a chance to make a big jump into the Western race; Detroit sits just one point out of 8th place and are two points behind the Predators at 7th.
On the other side is a Nashville team that is hoping to halt a four-game skid, including a tough 3-2 loss to Columbus on Tuesday night. On The Forecheck says this is the most important game of the season for the Predators and it’s tough to argue. One more loss and things will get hairy in the Music City.
