Wisconsin 63, Penn State 46: Trevon Hughes Leads Badgers To Big Road Win
January 3, 2010 - University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Trevon Hughes finished with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds, as 23rd-ranked Wisconsin took a 63-46 victory over Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Jason Bohannon added 11 points and four assists for the Badgers (12-2, 2-0 Big Ten), who beat Ohio State in their conference opener on New Year’s Eve. Ryan Evans ended with 10 points as Wisconsin took its sixth consecutive win overall.
Talor Battle had 15 points and four assists to pace the Nittany Lions (8-6, 0-2), who lost at Minnesota on December 29 to open Big Ten play. David Jackson added 13 points, but no other Penn State player reached double figures.
Wisconsin surged ahead with a 10-0 run early in the first half. Hughes’ layup ended the rally with 12:44 left for an 18-7 advantage.
The Badgers were in front for the rest of the half, with their lead reaching double figures at times. Evans’ jumper capped the half’s scoring to send Wisconsin into the break with a 34-22 lead.
Penn State shot just 36 percent in the first half and wasn’t any better in the second, going 8-for-23 (34.8 percent). Andrew Jones made 1-of-2 foul shots with just under 11 minutes to play to trim the Lions’ deficit to 49-40, but Tim Jarmusz and Hughes followed with threes, and the Badgers cruised the rest of the way.
Wisconsin made 8-of-19 three-point attempts, while PSU sank 5-of-19 from long range...The Lions shot 7-of-19 from the foul line...Battle and Hughes each had five turnovers...Wisconsin plays Wednesday at Michigan State, while Penn State hosts Michigan on Thursday.
