LSU dropped to 0-7 in the SEC this afternoon, thanks to a 67-51 loss at Mississippi State. That led to a few people asking on twitter if the Tigers are the worst team in a BCS conference right now.
Who’s The Worst Hoops Team In A BCS League?
↵To answer this question, I took a look at the six teams who currently sit in last place in the six BCS leagues, and disqualified three teams from the race.
↵Miami, since they’re currently 15-5 overall, even if they are 1-5 in the ACC.
↵Nebraska, who’s 12-8, but winless in the Big 12.
↵Oregon State, even though they lost to Seattle by 51 at home. The Beavers are 3-5 in the Pac-10 right now.
↵That means the three nominees are...
↵LSU: The aforementioned Tigers are losers of seven straight and 10 of their last 11, making them 0-7 in the SEC and 9-12 overall. The Bayou Bengals, are the only team in this group that hasn’t suffered a really embarassing loss.
↵Penn State: The defending NIT champions probably won’t repeat. They currently are riding an eight-game losing streak. They’re 0-8 in the Big Ten and 8-12 overall heading into Sunday’s game at Purdue. The Nittany Lions lost to UNC Wilmington, who is now on their second coach of the season, and Tulane en route to a seventh place finish in the Charleston Classic.
↵Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights have lost nine straight, including eight Big East games. They’re 9-11 heading into tonight’s contest with Notre Dame. Their worst loss is either center Gregory Echenique’s decision to transfer or their home setback to America East contender Vermont.
↵Since the other two nominees have at least tasted some success recently, while all Rutgers has had to look forward to is loss after gut-wrenching loss, the Scarlet Knights are my pick.
↵What say you, the college basketball public?
↵UPDATE: Of course, after I write this, the Scarlet Knights beat Notre Dame at home, 74-73. They must have read this. You can read more about the win at our Rutgers’ blog, Protect R Turf.
