The Oakland A's, in search of a fourth outfielder, have agreed to a deal with Gabe Gross:
Gabe Gross Lands In Oakland
A team source confirmed to MLB.com on Sunday that the A’s have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent Gabe Gross.
The club has not announced the deal, but the outfielder’s contract, according to the source, is worth $750,000 with plate-appearance incentives that can bring it to $1 million.
A career .239/.337/.399 hitter, the 31 year old Gross has made a name for himself by playing good to great defense at all three outfield positions. His defensive value makes up for a lackluster bat, and between Gross, Coco Crisp, Rajai Davis, and Ryan Sweeney, the A's have put together an outfield that will have a wonderful influence on the pitching staff.
The addition of Gross will likely lead to the demotion (or trade) of Travis Buck, a promising outfielder whose career has been derailed by injuries. Gross will step in to back up all three outfield positions and also act as a left-handed bat off the bench.
A’s blog Athletics Nation is having a lively discussion on the signing.
