January 5, 2010 – Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – D.J. Richardson scored a game-high 17 points as he led the Illinois Fighting Illini to a 59-42 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in a Big Ten tilt at Assembly Hall.

Richardson converted 5-of-7 shots behind the three-point line off the bench for Illinois (10-5, 2-0 Big Ten) as the team won for the second time in the last three outings. Demetri McCamey chipped in nine points and handed out seven assists in a reserve role as well.

The Hawkeyes (5-10, 0-3) failed to have a single player score in double digits, with Eric May coming close with his nine points to go along with eight boards. Aaron Fuller contributed six points and a team-best nine rebounds in the squad’s third straight setback.

Iowa grabbed an early one-point lead in the opening minutes of the contest, but with a mere five field goals in the first half the visitors soon found themselves trailing by 22 points at the break, 37-15.

In the second half neither team shot the ball well from the field, yet despite 29.6 percent accuracy from the floor in the period Illinois still cruised to the 17-point win.

Bench play was an integral part of the contest as the Illini reserves outscored the Hawkeyes backups, 36-8.
