Joe Thornton is a smart dude.
Joe Thornton Signs Three-Year, $21 Million Contract Extension
He's getting older at 31 years old now and there's a new CBA coming between the NHL and his union in three years. He understands the uncertainties of this situation, so instead of signing a mega-contract that the San Jose Sharks surely would be happy to offer him, he instead decided to re-sign for a more conservative three-year, $21 million deal.
The Sharks announced the deal -- and the financial terms (weird) -- on Saturday.
Here’s a bit from the team press release:
"Joe stepped up and made a tremendous commitment to this franchise, his teammates and the fans in San Jose," Wilson said. "We are very pleased that we now have another key piece of this team's core under contract for the next four seasons."
Along with core players like Patrick Marleau, Joe Pavelski, Ryane Clowe, Dan Boyle, Douglas Murray, Dany Heatley and others, the Sharks have again ensured their most valued assets are under contract long term.
The team’s five highest-paid players -- Thornton, Heatley, Pavelski, Boyle and Marleau -- now all have contracts that expire in 2014. That should be a fun summer.
