At first glance, any comparison between the moving of a two-year-old second-division U.S. soccer team that is lucky to have 10,000 fans worldwide and the potential folding of a English club with more than a 100 years of history and legions of supporters would seem to be a stretch.
Plights Of Austin Aztex, Portsmouth F.C. Not All That Different
Benjamin Massey of 86 Forever is nothing if not willing to think outside on the box on this one. He actually draws a fair comparison in the sense that a team lost is a team lost and points out that a U.S. division 2 side moving, rather than folding, is entirely unprecedented.
There are different sized teams in the soccer world. Next to 99% of the world’s professional soccer clubs, even a relegated Portsmouth is still a giant. The Austin Aztex are a relative minnow. Yet the soccer world has come together as one to cheer for the salvation of Pompey, while the Aztex will be allowed to move to Orlando with nary a puff of protest.
By all means, Portsmouth F.C. must be saved if it lays within our power to save them. But spare a thought, and spare some support, for poor little Austin too. A small injustice is still an injustice.
He makes a compelling point and one that should not be ignored. It is one thing for the Aztex fans to lose their team, but it is just salting their wounds to have them lose it this way.
