James McCarthy was injured in Wigan's 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday when Fabrice Muamba committed a reckless challenge on the midfielder, sliding in from behind with a scissor kick. When Muamba went in for the ball, he found a tiny piece of it, but in the process caught McCarthy's right ankle and brought him down. McCarthy was stretchered off the pitch and taken to the hospital.
Wigan Midfielder James McCarthy Out For Up To Ten Weeks
While it’s better than the Latics first feared, the news that McCarthy could be out for ten weeks isn’t exactly music to Wigan’s ears. The young midfielder has started in all eleven Wigan games this season and is a pivotal part of Roberto Martinez’s side, with Martinez going so far as to call the tackle a “football crime”.
Wigan have been one of the Premier League's most inconsistent sides, starting the season by conceding a combined ten goals to Chelsea and Blackpool before beating Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Martinez will face his former players on Tuesday when the Latics welcome Swansea for the Carling Cup tie with the Championship side.
