Fantasy Football: Tony Romo Clavicle Injury Puts Jon Kitna On Center Stage

Welcome to the fantasy football world, Jon Kitna.

The Cowboys QB entered the big stage after QB Tony Romo hit the deck on Monday Night Football and it was later discovered he could be out two months recovering from a broken clavicle. That means his backup, Kitna, is now in command of a very talented offense.

Kitna last started a full season in 2007 when he directed a talented yet underachieving Detroit Lions offense.

Most of the time a backup quarterback means less fantasy stats. That will likely be the case here but not by much. Kitna has experience in the last few years putting up major numbers. He went over 4,000 yards as a starter in Detroit in 2006 and 2007.

Oh, and his No. 1 receiver during those two years? The same Roy Williams that’s currently on the Cowboys.

In fact, Williams has his top two seasons (by yards) of his career playing with Kitna. We don’t necessarily expect that to happen but early on Williams could be a favorite target based on familiarity. Or Kitna could spread it out to the various weapons on the Cowboys offense as he did in Detroit. The point is that Kitna, in his career, has generally thrown for a lot of yards when given the opportunity.

Romo is a No. 1 quarterback so it’s always going to hurt if he goes down. But as far as backup quarterbacks go, Kitna is among the best options. Everywhere he’s been given a chance in his career there have been a few constants: Lots of yards, lots of TDs and lots of interceptions.

If you can handle the interceptions, Kitna can probably give you good backup numbers in yards and TDs to match.
