San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary on Wednesday announced that it would be Troy Smith getting the nod at QB for the 49ers this week. The regular starter, QB Alex Smith, will be out possibly several weeks with a left shoulder sprain.

He said he thought Smith knew enough of the offense but conceded that this week's practice - the first time Smith has worked with the first-team offense - will be revealing. Singletary said the team would not elevate practice-squad quarterback Nate Davis at this time and that there would be no No. 3, or emergency, quarterback Sunday against the Broncos.
Smith came to the team in the first week of September and he was, at least we thought he was the third string QB. With Alex Smith down, the 49ers skipped right over QB David Carr who didn't play so hot filling in for Smith last week.
Troy Smith, entering his fourth year in the NFL, hasn't started a game since his rookie year. He was originally drafted by the Ravens before signing on with the 49ers in September.
