Jeff Cunningham's 67' penalty on Saturday did a lot more than provide Dallas FC a three-goal lead over the Chicago Fire.
Cunningham Ties MLS All-Time Goals-Scored Record As Dallas Ties Unbeaten Record
The goal was his 11th of the season, but more importantly it was the 132nd of his career, tying Jaime Moreno on MLS's all-time list. It was also his league-leading fourth successful penalty of the season and his 19th (fourth all-time) of his career. Cunningham earned the penalty on his own, streaking past the Chicago defense on a nice throughball from Marvin Chavez before being taken down from behind.
The 3-0 victory ran Dallas FC's unbeaten streak to 18 matches, also tying the MLS record set in 2004 by the Columbus Crew. Dallas (49 points in 27 matches) kept pace with current Supporter's Shield leader Real Salt Lake (51 points in 27 matches), who held on to beat New England 2-1. The Los Angeles Galaxy (50 points in 26 matches) play the SuperClasico against Chivas USA today.
That Cunningham would have an opportunity to catch Moreno this season seemed unlikely for much of the campaign as the 34-year-old was relegated to the bench for 12 matches.
But even as a reserve, Cunningham found ways to score and played his way back into the starting 11. Cunningham found the back of the net three times as a sub, including two in one match.
