Back around July 1st, Ilya Kovalchuk was the biggest free agent in the NHL. At the time, two teams severely courted him, Los Angeles and New Jersey. After the month long back and forth, Kovalchuk ultimately decided on New Jersey as his destination. Right now, that isn’t looking to be the best decision out there. The Devils are in the Eastern Conference basement with a 3-7-1 record and staring at greater issues with their salary cap. The Kings are in 1st place in the Western Conference.
10:00 P.M.: Kovalchuk Returns To Los Angeles With Devils
The main question is how will Kings fans react to Kovalchuk. Kings coach Terry Murray doesn’t expect much of a reaction out of the crowd:
“I don’t think anybody knows about it around here, quite honestly. A few of the players know. Brownie and Greener picked him up downtown and took him out to dinner one night, but that’s the extent of it. I went out and had a cup of coffee with him - I had to buy it - so that was the extent of his time around here.”
As far as the fans go, there may be a light reaction from the crowd but they most likely realize that they are grateful they didn’t end up with Kovalchuk.
