The fledgling WPS appears to have been dealt another potentially deadly blow.
Women’s Professional Soccer Losing Two More Teams, Report Says
The FC Gold Pride (based out of San Jose, CA) and the Washington Freedom have folded, according to a report from women’s soccer blog The Equalizer. The story says an official announcement will be coming this week.
Those would be the second and third WPS teams to fold since May when St. Louis Athletica ceased operations midseason.
This leaves the league with six teams, none of them west of Chicago. The remaining teams are the Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, Philadelphia Independence, Sky Blue FC (New Jersey) and Western New York, which was an expansion team in September and temporarily brought the league back to eight teams.
The league started play in 2009 with seven teams, but the league lost to Los Angeles Sol before the start of the second season.
The league could continue to operate with fewer than eight teams, but that is something that will likely be addressed in the coming week.
