Vancouver Trades Shane O’Brien To Nashville

The Vancouver Canucks have found a way to alleviate their glut at defensemen with the trade of Shane O`Brien and forward Dan Gendur to the Nashville Predators for defenseman Ryan Parent and forward Jonas Andersson. Parent was then waived by the Canucks. If he clears, which he likely will, it's assumed he'll be sent to the Manitoba Moose.

O’Brien has been a penalty minute machine in the two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. O’Brien had 277 penalty minutes in 141 games with Vancouver. Our Canucks site, Nucks Misconduct had this to say about O’Brien:

[O’Brien] has long been a thorn in the side of Vigneault and Gillis, a guy he plucked out of Tampa and got some decent mileage out of, but one who routinely had problems keeping his mouth shut and playing the game. He toned down his own goal and PIM problems last year (though still was the worst player from a penalty +/- perspective) and showed some limited upside in the playoffs, but they key word there is definitely limited.

Our Nashville site, On The Forecheck, had this to say initially about the deal:

Given that O’Brien had already cleared waivers without Nashville biting, the only two options remaining to rationalize this deal are (1) getting Gendur included, which wouldn’t appear to be a major priority, or (2) getting rid of Jonas Andersson’s one-way contract. Combined with Parent, these two would have made $1.525 million this season even with Andersson (as was likely) in the minors.

Instead, the two are swapped by an established NHL player in O’Brien at $1.6 million, although it’s an open question as to whether he’ll be an asset on the Nashville blueline. I have serious doubts about this.
