Chilean miner Edison Peña spent 69 days trapped in a mine will now take on another type of challenge. He will be a guest of honor and will run in the New York City Marathon:
Chilean Miner Edison Peña To Run In New York City Marathon
Peña will appear as a "special guest of honor" at the Nov. 7 race New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary WIttenberg announced in a statement Monday.
Peña, the 12th miner rescued, has expressed interest in running the race to the Chilean Consulate in New York, but it was not immediately clear whether he would run some or all of the 26.2 mile course.
Peña was given the nickname “The Runner” while trapped in the mine as he jogged up and down the mine to keep his mind and body sharp.
This could be the first in a long list of ‘celebrity’ appearances for these Chilean miners such as taking a spot in the highly coveted NBA celebrity basketball game during All-Star weekend, or wiping the floor with those pansies on Survivor who have it much easier then being trapped in a mine for just over two months.
