The preseason poll for the AP All-America Team was released Tuesday, and for the first time ever, a freshman earned his way to the first team. Harrison Barnes, the should-be North Carolina super star and early favorite for National Player of the Year, got the lowest vote total of all first teamers, but will likely be on this same list next April.
UNC’s Harrison Barnes Makes AP’s Preseason All-America Team
Joining Barnes is Duke's Kyle Singler, who earned the most votes, Kansas State's Jacob Pullen, Jimmer Fredette of BYU, and Jajuan Johnson from Purdue. The preseason poll is mostly looked at as a reward for players with an excellent body of work, making the Barnes inclusion even more surprising, every other player besides Barnes is entering their senior season.
This is indicative of the great respect that Harrison has nationally, and it’s an unbelievable accomplishment for a freshman,” said Tar Heels coach Roy Williams, who is coming off his first non-NCAA tournament season at North Carolina. “I know Harrison would agree, however, that it would be even more exciting to make the All-America team that’s picked after the season.
If the performance of other super freshmen such as John Wall or Michael Beasley tells us anything about what to expect from Barnes, making the final poll will be no problem.
