The pay-per-view is underway at Cowboys Stadium, and in the first fight of the night, lightweight contender Brandon Rios (26-0-1, 19 KO) stopped Omri Lowther (14-3, 10 KO) after mostly one-sided action in the fifth round.
Pacquiao Vs. Margarito Undercard: Brandon Rios Stops Omri Lowther In Fifth Round To Open The Show
Rios came in out of shape, as he was scheduled to fight on December 4, but was called into action for this show when original PPV undercard headliner Kelly Pavlik pulled out of his scheduled bout with an injury. Rios, who trains with Antonio Margarito under Robert Garcia, made headlines this week for his involvement in a video that appeared to make light of Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach’s Parkinson’s disease.
But the young Mexican-American had his usual performance in the ring tonight, walking through the punches of the overmatched Lowther. Rios kept landing shots both to the head and body throughout the bout, which was mostly one-sided. Lowther had his moments in the fight, but simply couldn’t hurt his opponent. After the fourth round, Lowther’s corner openly considered stopping the fight, but let the fighter go back into the fight for the fifth. Eventually, the referee was forced to step in and stop the action.
Our Pacquioa-Margarito updates will continue throughout the night. There are two more undercard bouts, as well as a performance by Nelly (!), before the main eventers get in the ring at Cowboys Stadium. Stay tuned.
