Dan Uggla Trade Rumors Swirling As Marlins Shop Second Baseman

The 30-year-old Dan Uggla has been a standout second baseman with the Marlins from the time he arrived. He slugged 27 home runs in his 2006 rookie season and has yet to post an OPS under .805 in any single year. However, he's now a year away from free agency, and he and the Marlins haven't been able to agree on a contract extension. The Marlins have offered $48 million over four years, while Uggla is apparently seeking a five-year deal. The result?

The Marlins have evidently decided that, if they can’t re-sign Uggla to a long-term deal, the time is now to cash him in for what they can get. And so the trade rumors are blowing up, as a number of teams have interest in a power-hitting, attainable infielder.

Buster Olney reports that the Blue Jays may be the favorites to land Uggla. However, a number of teams are known to be involved, with many of them seeing Uggla as more of a third baseman than a second baseman. Uggla has never been known to be much in the field, and he's only getting older.

Uggla batted .287 last year, with a .508 slugging percentage. For his career, those marks are .263 and .488. He strikes out a lot and has trouble in the field, but he’s always been able to deliver the power, which is the skill that makes him most interesting.

Stay tuned as the Uggla story develops. The Marlins could still try to re-sign him, or they could bring him back for his final year of arbitration, but they’ll have a number of teams in their ear.
