Steven Gerrard picked up a hamstring injury in Wednesday's friendly against France, hobbling off the Wembley pitch in the 85th minute. Liverpool are understandably a bit upset, seeing as the FA apparently reassured the club that Gerrard would play an hour maximum. Fabio Capello defended his decision to leave the midfielder on the pitch by citing "seniority", noting that injuries to Gareth Barry and Rio Ferdinand required the 30-year-old to stick out the match.
Liverpool Express Frustration With FA After Steven Gerrard Picks Up Injury
Liverpool fitness coach Darren Burgess, who joined the club in the summer, used his Twitter account to criticize Capello and the FA:
“Unbelievable from all associated with England and English FA with regard to SGs [Steven Gerrard’s] injury. Completely ignored agreement and past history.”
“Completely amateurish and now we pay for their incompetence. Absolutely disgraceful.”
While the tweets were pulled about an hour after they were posted, there’s no denying Liverpool’s frustration with the England friendly. The Reds are having enough issues finding the back of the net-seeing their captain fall to injury is not likely to help them continue their climb up the table.
