For the segment of Division I football that does have a playoff system and a national championship game, the field is set.
FCS Playoff Schedule 2010: Appalachian State Earns Top Seed In 20-Team Bracket
The NCAA has released the 2010 FCS playoff schedule, and the Appalachian State Mountaineers have the top seed in the 2010 Division I Football Championship.
Jerry Moore’s team, which won three straight national championships from 2005 to 2007, is making its sixth straight appearance in the Championship, and is one of four teams that will host winners of first-round matchups. The other three: second-seeded William and Mary, third-seeded Delaware, and fourth-seeded Montana State. Eastern Washington is seeded fifth, rounding out the seeded teams, which means there will likely be a nationally televised game on the Eagles’ blood-red field.
Last year’s national champion, Villanova, will travel to Texas to play at Stephen F. Austin in a second round matchup.
The Division I Football Championship will actually last beyond most of the FBS bowl season, with the 2011 Division 1 Football Championship Game taking place on January 7th, at Dallas’ Pizza Hut Park. You can see the complete NCAA bracket here.
