Despite rumors to the contrary, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti will not be quitting Chelsea following a few weeks of turmoil. After a blazing start to the season, Chelsea has sputtered and has won just three points from their last four matches. It must be noted that the Blues are going through a bad spell of injuries with several key players missing matches and leaving Chelsea so short on central defenders that they undoubtedly will have to make a buy in January, but the bad run of form is not the leading reason behind the rumors of his resignation.
Unfortunatley, It Needs To be Said: Carlo Ancelotti Not Quitting Chelsea
Two weeks ago, assistant manager Ray Wilkins was sacked by owner Roman Abramovich, a decision that upset Ancelotti. Wilkins had a 24 year playing career for some of the top clubs, including 179 appearances for Chelsea and 84 caps for England. After his retirement, he fashioned himself a coaching career that included a spell managing Fulham and two stints as caretaker manager for Chelsea. He spent the last two years as an assistant coach on the Chelsea staff and was one of one of Ancelotti's most trusted men.
Wilkins’ dismissal led Ancelotti to say, “I am just technical direction. Full stop.” That, along with several other recent comments about Wilkins’ dismissal and Chelsea’s poor form are what led to the rumors of Ancelotti’s impending resignation, something that bookies put odds on happening, but both Ancelotti and Chelsea has dismissed the rumors with Chelsea labeling them, “absolute nonsense.”
Even through their poor run of form, Ancelotti has not skirted criticism. He has also dismissed any suggestions that the drama surround the Wilkins situation, which only intensified when it was reported that Wilkins was investigating legal options for “unfair dismissal,” had a part to play in Chelsea’s losing.
“Obviously (criticism) can happen when the team doesn’t win,” Ancelotti said. “There is more responsibility on the coach but this is normal. This is my job. If the team is not doing a good job, it is normal to have more responsibility. This (the Wilkins situation) is not the reason why we lost the game(s). We lost the games because in four games, we scored just one goal.”
