Richard Seymour Fined $25,000 For Punching Ben Roethlisberger

Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour was fined $25,000 for a punch he landed on Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger late in the second quarter of Oakland's 35-3 loss Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Seymour was ejected from the game for the hit. Steelers linebacker James Harrison, no stranger to fines himself, on Monday said he wanted to see Seymour suspended for the hit.

Earlier in the game, Seymour had been scuffling with Steelers linemen Chris Kemoeatu. Seymour referenced some of the ongoing scrapping with Steelers players in his explanation to the Contra Costa Times:

"Well, first of all, I thought I let my teammates down. You never want to do anything to hurt the team. That's first and foremost. It was a lot of ongoing, and you're out there to protect yourself. It's still no excuse. I'm not sure exactly what happened on the play. I just turned around, and he just ran up on me quick. It was just natural reaction."

Seymour was fined twice for hits during the 2009 season - his first with the Raiders - so it's not as though he's a first-time offender. Given how much Harrison has been fined for hits less intentionally flagrant than the one Seymour delivered.
