Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fàbregas will be out for at least two weeks after picking up a new hamstring injury during the Gunners' 2-0 defeat to Braga in midweek. Arsène Wenger elected to use the Arsenal captain for the team's Champions League match, even amidst speculation that Fàbregas would be rested in order to continue recovering from an injury to his left hamstring.
Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas Out At Least Two Weeks With Fresh Hamstring Injury
The use of a still-unhealthy Fàbregas reveals Wenger’s deep desire to win a trophy this season. While Wenger is the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history, the team hasn’t won the Premier League since 2003-2004, and has never won the Champions League under his reign. Although Arsenal had one group stage match remaining in the tournament-against Partizan Belgrade, who have yet to pick up a point-Wenger was determined to clinch advancement to the Round of 16, and so he took a risk on Fàbregas.
Now, Wenger says the team may have to “be more cautious” in using Fàbregas. Seems a bit like closing the barn door after the cows have escaped, but then again, it must be difficult to have one of the best players in the Premier League and not use him in every match. With striker Robin Van Persie easing back into action for Arsenal, we’ll likely have a chance to see if Wenger learns from his mistakes.
