The story dominating a number of outlets right now is the Yankees' continuing contract battle with free agent shortstop Derek Jeter. Jeter, though, isn't the only Yankees icon who's currently unsigned. Closer Mariano Rivera is a free agent as well, but talks between his side and the team are going much more smoothly.
Mariano Rivera, Yankees Engaged In Productive Free Agency Talks
Rivera is said to be seeking a two-year contract worth about $18 million per season. The Yankees would prefer to take things one year at a time, as Rivera turned 41 years old on Monday, but the difference between Rivera and Jeter is that, while Jeter is coming off the worst season of his career, Rivera remains as effective as ever, having posted a sub-2.00 ERA for three consecutive seasons. He saved 33 games in 2010 while allowing just 39 hits in 60 innings.
Because of Rivera’s sustained success, the Yankees will be more willing to meet or approach his demands. He will almost certainly get a raise from the $15 million he made last year, and could end up with a one-year contract with a vesting 2012 option.
