On Monday, the Dodgers signed infielder Juan Uribe to a three-year contract worth $21 million. That left utility guy Ryan Theriot without a spot on the roster, so rather than drop him outright, the Dodgers have elected to trade him, dealing Theriot to the Cardinals in exchange for Blake Hawksworth.
Ryan Theriot Traded From Dodgers To Cardinals For Blake Hawksworth
Theriot - who batted .270 last season as a member of both the Dodgers and Cubs - is experienced up the middle, and is viewed as a shortstop by St. Louis. He will likely replace Brendan Ryan, who is coming off a miserable 2010. Theriot has two remaining years of team control.
Hawksworth, meanwhile, is a 27-year-old righty who has a 4.07 ERA over 130.1 Major League innings. He has a four-pitch repertoire headed by a low- to mid-90s fastball, and he should end up working out of the Dodgers bullpen as a long reliever.
It isn’t a big trade, but it’s one that may fill two holes. Read more over at True Blue LA and Viva El Birdos.
