Giants Sign Miguel Tejada To One-Year Contract, Replacing Juan Uribe

Just Monday, the Giants lost Juan Uribe when the infielder signed a three-year contract with division rival Los Angeles. They were left with a hole at shortstop, and there were rumors that they'd chase after Jason Bartlett, but in a sudden turn, they've opted instead to sign veteran Miguel Tejada to a one-year contract.

According to Enrique Rojas, the contract will be worth $6.5 million, with an additional $0.5 million in incentives. It's a slight raise from the $6 million Tejada made in 2010 as a member of the Orioles and Padres.

The 36-year-old Tejada struggled last season, posting a .692 OPS that was his lowest since 1998, and at his advanced age, he's also no longer much in the field. However, he seemed a bit rejuvenated after getting dealt to San Diego, and the Giants will hope that he's able to carry that over into next year. He posted a .730 OPS with the Padres and was a big part of their attempt at the playoffs.

It’s not a sexy signing, but in a thin market for middle infielders, it was about the best the Giants could do. There is also a slim possibility that the Giants will keep trying for Bartlett anyway, and look to install Tejada at third base. Read more over at McCovey Chronicles.
