New Mexico Bowl, BYU Vs. UTEP: A Storied History Of Five Years

The 2010 New Mexico Bowl (or "New Mexico Bowl V") will pit the BYU Cougars against the UTEP Miners on December 18 in Albuquerque. You may remember the New Mexico Bowl for being the first postseason matchup of the season, for being one of the few such contests not saddled with five or six odious sponsors in the title, or for being a bowl game played in New Mexico.

It’s been a massively disappointing campaign for the Cougars; the 2010 season saw them lose to both ranked teams on their schedule and Utah State (a loss that cost them defensive coordinator Jaime Hill). Their points allowed column did trend downward slightly after Hill’s ousting, but what really boosted the team was the offense: Three of the team’s last five wins featured an output of more than 40 points on the scoreboard.
The Miners played their designated roles as Mike Price-directed agents of chaos perfectly in 2010, beating only some of the good teams they should’ve rolled and losing to only a few of the terrible squads that we predicted would trip them up. A 28-14 victory over SMU was the lone highlight of a season-ending slide that saw UTEP lose five of their last six games.
The 2010 New Mexico Bowl kicks off at 2 p.m. EST. Browse our complete 2010 college football postseason schedule, and connect with UTEP and BYU fans at SB Nation’s Miner Rush and Vanquish The Foe.
