Having lost first baseman Adam LaRoche to free agency, the Diamondbacks have been in the market for a bat. On Wednesday, they got one, signing Xavier Nady.
Xavier Nady Signs One-Year Contract With Diamondbacks
According to Jon Heyman, Nady’s in on a one-year contract worth a base salary of $1.75 million. There are an additional $1 million in incentives, in case Nady succeeds and gets a lot of playing time. No matter what happens, it’ll be a cut from the $3.5 million Nady made in 2010, but then, he must’ve seen a cut coming.
The 32-year-old Nady is a righty who spent last season with the Cubs, batting just .256 with six home runs. However, he has a career .776 OPS and has historically hit pretty well against lefties, which gives him some use. He isn't expected to be an everyday player in Arizona, and will instead play both first base and the outfield, serving as something of a semi-regular.
