The Boston Red Sox continue to have the biggest and busiest offseason in baseball. They've traded for Adrian Gonzalez. They've signed Carl Crawford. They've signed Bobby Jenks. And now, they've signed Dan Wheeler.
Dan Wheeler Signs One-Year Contract With Red Sox
Wheeler and the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year contract worth $3 million. There is also a club option for 2012 worth $3 million, which would increase to $3.25 million in the event that Wheeler appears in 75 games this season.
Wheeler provides just more depth for a bullpen that already has Jenks, Daniel Bard, and Jonathan Papelbon as late-inning options. The Red Sox are said to be considering trading Papelbon, and Wheeler could help soften the blow.
The 33-year-old righty reliever appeared in 64 games with the Rays last season, with 46 strikeouts and 16 walks in 48.1 innings. He's spent the last three and a half years with Tampa Bay and has a 3.56 ERA to show for it, although he does struggle with home runs.
